Belgian Music Industry Gets Even Greedier

As in most European countries, a tax is levied on blank media in Belgium. The entertainment industry argues that this serves to compensate for the lost royalties from "pirated" music, i.e., copying and passing around of songs. This was originally aimed at cassettes (1996) but expanded to include CDs (2004). (As we all know, the movie... [ read ]

When it comes to making print media, the number of options available to grassroots organisations and informal groups can be daunting. Indeed, with the rise of open source software packages, web 2.0 publishing tools, and crowd sourcing sites where one can hire designers for very low prices, the number of options is only increasing. What is exciting about these tools, however, is... [ read ]

Over the last few weeks, Viacom and Google have been in the news quite a bit due to their trial. Viacom is suing Google for $1 billion due to the amount of copyrighted material being posted on YouTube (which Google owns).

The Associated Press reports, "U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton authorized full access to the YouTube logs after Viacom Inc. and other copyright holders... [ read ]
BISA Copyright Review: K.I.S.S

There seems to be a number of copyright review processes underway these days and thank goodness for that. What strikes me is how important it is that we lawyers keep the process intelligible to the general public despite the tendency and temptation to completely geek out (in the legal sense). Lawrence Liang spoke about this a little in his introduction to the BISA (Brazil, India... [ read ]

Open Access - feasting on knowledge like manna

Yes, yes, we know it's been a while since Schmatler and Waldhead graced these digital pages with our sagely words of wisdom, but after the last series of articles we needed to take some time out to smell the roses and think about what big topics to tackle next. We actually had a great escape plan in place to get us out of the old... [ read ]

Last month, Jimmy Wales and I announced a new project for iCommons called the ‘Free Culture House’ project. Inspired by similar initiatives around the world, we have come to recognise the growing importance of physical spaces in building the kinds of communities that will spread the global commons. After all, the creative and information commons is by its nature a virtual and intangible... [ read ]

Are you the kind of person who just can’t help taking a look at the bookshelf every time you walk into someone’s house? Do you secretly wonder whether you should arrange your books by author, title or edition? Do you find yourself piling up the “to read” books by your bed, and adding to the pile every weekend? If so, then LibraryThing is the space for you.

A combination of catalogue... [ read ]

Fouad Bajwa, FOSS advocate & writer, Lahore (Pakistan) · Mar 26th, 2007 6:46 pm · 28 votes · no comments made
Whenever someone who is familiar with the beautiful history of South Asia hears the name of Lahore, a grand culture signified and coloured by a great history usually comes to mind. Lahore has always been the peaceful cultural capital of the Punjab province in Pakistan, home to beautiful Mughal gardens, historical buildings, mosques, libraries, museums, shrines, forts, towers and... John Spooner Revisioning iCommons

In 2005, iCommons was established as an outgrowth of Creative Commons with an objective to ‘advance the wider dissemination of non-commercial sharing of scientific, creative and other intellectual works by the general public’. Creative Commons was the sole member, guarantor and sponsor of the charity, providing organisational and financial support.

Today, iCommons has a small,... more
