What is art to icommons ?
Jamison · Oslo (Norway)
I notice on the icommons site that the artists does not have a home yet, nor are "the arts" listed as something searchable within the site.

how do I define an artist or art ? I reckon the best art is something that is created without too many restrictions, the more restrictions on the art, the less artistic it is. So everything within our culture is art, yet some is more art than other.

Reading the mission statement on the Icommons site "iCommons.org is a website for the stories and projects of social entrepreneurs that are building the digital commons around the world". The creative commons facebook statement that explains who creative commons is "I believe the laws governing creativity often neglect artists needs".

If you have to write a project to get funding for your art, does it become less artistic ? If the music you created has to fit to a certain formula to be aired on the radio, how art is it really for that person ? If your painting has to look a certain way to be on a gallery wall, to get to the exhibition. Do artists look at that art as art ? If you have spent your life writing a certain style of text and then you create your art based on that, is that the art we want more of ?

The most active people within the icommons community are educators. Creative commons is based around centers of knowledge, most people within the icommons community that regard themselves as artists have most likely been to some form of art school. Someone who was able to goto an art school to get in touch with their creativity is more fortunate than an artist that didn't have this opportunity. Although a lot might argue that artists are often restricted by what they learn.

Example of not so fortunate artist: A person washing dishes with little education is humming some revolutionary tune with no means to have it heard. She starts to sing her revolution to the kitchen and gets fired as the vibe does not fit the space. In an act of rage the artist goes to work on bill boards with a spray can. The person gets caught by the police and ends up doing 3 months community service, painting over walls covered with graffiti. On the same path is the trained artist that is hanging his art on walls and networking his way to freedom through the digital commons in New York.

It would be nice to see Icommons become a place where all artists are able/welcome to meet/integrate and find solutions with creators.

Some thoughts on how to do this:

* Create an Artist Meeting Point/place that would integrate into the icommons site that also connects with other sites with similar ideas about art & creative commons.

Some sites I have found recently.

http://www.pluginamp.com
http://www.60sox.org
http://www.CultureLoad.net
http://openmusiccontest.org

*Change the Icommons mission statement to include an artist focus.

*Create galleries within the Icommons site.

*Bring the CC Saloons together through Icommons. Put out submission for participation of artists at CC parties/events/saloons.

*CC workshops on how to explain & communicate CC.

For me art is something that just sits right within me, when I click with that art its a buzz. When people click with my art, the buzz is bigger. With the net here, art is not just for the establishment; its here for us all. The more art we have in our lives the better things are for everything and everyone. The more people want to create a resource out of that feeling, the more tainted the art gets and the harder it is for art to flow.
