Lessig on Digital Barbarism
Lawrence Lessig has posted a review of David Halperin's recent book, Digital Barbarism.
Halperin, who authored the (in)famous New York Times article calling for perpetual copyright, has now compiled his ideas into a book. Lessig offers a much-needed critique, including citing misconceptions about Creative Commons (Halperin conflates it not only with "freeware" with software... more

This month our 10 questions go to Judge Jongsoo Yoon, Judge for the Seoul Northern District Court of Korea and coordinator at the Korean Association For Infomedia Law (KAFIL). Judge Yoon played a central role in the porting of CC licences to South Korea. And who would have known that this CC enthusiast has a penchant for Linkin Park? Read on...
1. How did you get involved in Creative Commons Korea?
In 2003, Glenn Otis Brown who was Executive Director of Creative Commons at that time, was invited to the Symposium held by KAFIL, which is an abbreviation of Korea Association for Info-Media Law. There, I had a chance to hear his speech and it was the moment I stepped into a new world. After one year, KAFIL started the CC launching project. As the manager of KAFIL, I got involved in the work of the project leads for ccKorea.
2. What do you find most exciting about the Creative Commons movement?
Balance and Culture. These two factors are the best things which I have tried to pursue and enjoy in my public and
private life. I could find both of them in CC at once. What a wonderful world! But above all, I love great people. Whenever I meet commoners from all over the world, I can feel their passions, dreams, ideas, wits and commons. It's a valuable experience for me.
3. Which CC licence is your favourite? And why?
Just BY. What else more do I need?
4. How are you involved in ccKorea at the moment?
I'm still in love with ccKorea and playing a role as a director. Two month ago we held the first ccSalon in Seoul and are
now setting up the ccMixter site. And recently I've provided advice and suggestions for application of CC licences as requested in both private and public sectors. I think it's a good sign. But we need more imagination and creative projects.
5. Tell us about the current intellectual property landscape in South Korea.
We are now faced with two big matters that can change the intellectual property landscape. The bill to amend the Copyright Law is up for consideration and the negotiation for Free Trade Agreements between Korea and U.S.A. is under way. Unfortunately, in either case more reinforcement of property is expected. So we are trying to recover the balance.
6. What do you think should be done to make Korean culture and society more open and free?
In my country, everything has changed rapidly so far. It has made our society very dynamic, but led to lack of room for diversity. We need a good understanding of the diversity and various viewpoints in every field. Just seeing examples and gaining experiences as well as the change of the social system can make us imagine a more free and open world. I'm in the strong belief that CC will play an important role for those examples and experiences.
7. Which book are you reading at the moment?
Revolutionary Wealth by Alvin Toffler. It's good. But I prefer Larry's one.
8. What do you do to relax?
Too many things. Listening to music, playing guitars and saxophone, watching movies, reading books, drinking, playing soccer with my kids and having coffee with my wife. So I'm never relaxed.
9. If you could have dinner with a deceased historical character, who would that be and why?
Kurt Cobain. I would ask him, 'why?'
10. Are you a sports fan? If so, which sport do you support and why?
Snowboarding. If you try it once, you will know why.
