Flickr to the aid of CC, by Northern Star
In India, Creative Commons is still an unknown entity. Even amongst the tech savvy crowd, CC is something they have heard of but never gone deep enough to understand, let alone use it in any of their work.

In an informal survey that I did with a bunch of people, an interesting fact came out in the open. Most of the folks came to know that is such a thing as Creative Commons existed only after seeing it being used in Flickr.

Flickr is big in usage amongst bloggers here in India and it has played a key role in introducing CC to many of them.

Amit Agarwal, one of India's leading bloggers, has written a simple guide in 'Dummies' style taking Flickr as an example to explain CC.

A recommended read for someone who is very new to CC.

Hey Kiruba

Thanks for pointing to this guide. I was thinking that what would also be cool is a guide on how to effectively find CC licensed photos on Flickr - I think that this may be confusing to some... :) Maybe this could be developed into a nice 'how to' guide...

Just some thoughts... :)

You are right, Dan. A nice how-to guide on 'How to Find CC Licenced Photos' would definitely be useful and this can be a starting point.

Alphonse The Dummies style guide was useful. Do you know of a Dummies style video that explains creative commons?

I searched YouTube and found this nice 8 minute video of Larry Lessig explaining Creative Commons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWxyx5iYdvI

Here's another educational short video from Creative Commons team explaining what the CC license is all about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BESbnMJg9M

and oh, a really cool short advertisement that very neatly explains what CC is. Its probably the closest to the dummys style you were asking for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKQmj56MLVg

re: finding CC content on Flickr, they make this really hard, as the option is hidden inside 'advanced' options, which are not available from every view of the system, and furthermore isn't sticky: for every search, you have to go back to that hidden CC search, instead of having it as a default... supportive infrastructure counts!

Whenever I need to find CC content of Flickr, I find it much easier to use the CC search function built into Mozilla Firefox, or just http://search.creativecommons.org - you just need to choose Flickr as the site you want to search. Because, like Alek says, looking from within Flickr is a bit of a nightmare.

Bec, thanks for pointing out to CC search function in Firefox. I've started to use it more often after learning about it.

Alex, I agree with you that finding CC content is difficult in flickr. What I'm talking about is about people hearing about CC. Very very few people actively use CC in India but atleast a few people know that something called CC exists thank to Flickr.
