So, I have attended the Birds of a Feather presentation for Star Wreck, and it was pretty cool. Stefen is an awesome hoster, and Samuli makes a mean vodka. A really mean one.
The session, off course, focused mostly on Star Wreck, and the public was interested in some of technical aspects behind the production of the movie. By now, pretty much everyone knows about Star Wreck, I mean, it is like just one of the most seen movies over the whole Internet... and it will probably keep that position for a long while. It was released under a BY-ND-NC license, which seems quite restrictive to me, but it worked well in promoting the movie and it opened a whole window for a lot of other homebrew film makers. Until Star Wreck, nobody in the Western world ever thought they could have as much success as the average Hollywood movie. Creative Commons was a deciding factor here.
Prior to the meeting, I went for some coffee with Stefen and Samuli near Revellin. Samuli really invested a lot of years in this project, and his choice to license the movie under a CC license was not easy, at all. I am glad it worked out so well. For those who do not know him, Samuli Torssosen is the creator of Star Wreck, as well as the main actor for it. But I disgress.
Besides watching most of the movie--and drinking Finnish Vodka--we have learned about the //starwreckstudios.fi web site, which was just released, as well as the studio's next project: Iron Sky.
Iron Sky will be an insane movie about the conspiracy theory surrounding a possible Nazy base at the hidden side of the Moon. It's so crazy that it may just work. Samuli mentioned that they estimate to need a whole 2 million Euros for production costs, which is lot more than what was needed for Star Wreck. I guess they are going to be a lot more ambitious for this project. Personally, I would rather see them using a budget as tiny as the one for Star Wreck, but hey, I'm not a movie productor.
Oh, and everyone got a free DVD copy of Star Wreck. And, lo and behold, it has _no_ CSS protection! The cover is quite well produced. Comparing the cover with the ones used on the pirate copies from Russia and China--which we did during the session--was pretty interesting. Seems like the Chinese pirates really know what they are doing, since their cover was almost as well executed as the official one, Really nice work there. Seems like some of the pirates out there are quite professional in what they do.
