In 2005, iCommons was established as an outgrowth of Creative Commons with an objective to ‘advance the wider dissemination of non-commercial sharing of scientific, creative and other intellectual works by the general public’. Creative Commons was the sole member, guarantor and sponsor of the charity, providing organisational and financial support.
Today, iCommons has a small,... [ read ]

Being open is a positive principle on many levels: it improves quality, it provides the building blocks for innovation on top of current products and processes by understanding how they work, it builds security and trust because we know what is being done behind the veil, and it facilitates participation because we can see into the mechanics of a project and find a way to participate... Indian IP blog Spicy IP is running a fascinating article about the battle between the South African branches of car manufacturers Chrysler and Mahindra.
They're arguing about the legitimacy of Mahindra's use of the word 'jeep' (in lower case) in an advertisement to describe the type of vehicle they're manufacturing. Chrysler claims it owns the trademark to the world's oldest... [ read ]

According to this story on IP Watch, WIPO's copyright committee wrapped up it's meetings this week, and though some things have changed - a lot of it seems to be the same. Same chair, same Euro-centric dominance, same dissonance.
Have a look at IP Watch's William New's article.

This year marks the third year of operation at iCommons and the first on our own – separate from Creative Commons – as membership in iCommons by CC is diluted and other members are welcomed to the iCommons family.
We’ve come a long way in the last three years. Starting with two staff members sitting around a trestle table in a very small back office, the team has grown to a... [ read ]

In my last letter for the year, I look back at 2007’s biggest news, and what to look forward to in 2008.
2007 saw some major successes in the open education movement. The Cape Town Open Education Declaration was launched with the goal of accelerating the international effort to promote open resources, technology and teaching practices in education. Yale started an open courseware... [ read ]
