Option A: iSummit 08 Concert
| Okurayama Ski Jump venue, by Heather Ford |
 |
Here are a bunch of photographs of the first option for the iSummit Concert in Sapporo. Okurayama Ski Jump a wonderful venue on the top of a large hill where the Winter Olympics were held in 1972 in Sapporo. You can ride up to the top of the ski jump and see a wonderful view of Sapporo from the top (and even ski down in all weather if you're good - or crazy - enough) and there is a great interactive museum in the complex that enables you to experience a bit of the thrill of these winter sports yourself (without the injury potential). There are also separate indoor rooms above the venue (where the judges usually sit) for meetings.
I'm sure the rest of the team can add info here, but I'd say that the pros are that this venue is an important part of Hokkeido's history, that there are cool things to do around while you aren't listening to music, and that the views are incredible, and that there is a lot of space to fit people.
Cons are perhaps that it might be a little far from the conference venue.
Anything else to add?

If the venue had been the usual hotel ball room, I wouldn't have been as thrilled.
I'll give my two thumbs up for this venue.
However, here are a few points to ponder from the Dubrovnik experience.
1) In Dubrovnik, we had pathetic attendance for music concerts. There were only a handful of them. If I was a performing artist, I would have been disappointed. This time, we really have to introspect hard and plan to get larger crowds attending the concerts. ( Now, don't blame the invasion of the teens. That was just for one day)
2) In Sapporo, will the concert be held in open air. Oh, I really hope so. Open air does wonders and it make it all the more enjoyable. But we have to watch out for the rain gods. Given a choice, outdoors are great for concerts than indoors.
3) Heather, you mentioned that the venue is a little far away from the venue. If we can have transportation arranged (couple of buses), then this should be relatively ok.
4) Can we look at having the concerts a little earlier. After a long day of sessions, its only natural for folks to be tired. I remember a few folks who chose to take the 10:00 pm shuttle back to Mlini, event though they were interested in attending the concert. Lets make it a little easier for folks to attend the concerts yet be able to hit the sack early enough and get decent sleep.
My 2 cents worth.

1) attendance: I think this is a great point. It seemed as though participants wanted to talk to each other more than watching a concert. This year we are thinking of inviting local people to the concert - so that will probably get the crowds there, but it also means that we should have spaces where iSummiters can sit and talk if they want to. Would love to hear more ideas on this because I think its really critical to making the concert a success. I also think that we should probably have one or two very short messages at the concert from the community to make local people aware of why the movement is important, some of the things they can do etc.
2) If the concert is here it will be in the open air - weather permitting. Apparently it rarely rains in July here.
3) Transportation will be provided so that's probably no big deal :)
4) Point noted about the timing of concerts - lets get this party started early!

Secondly, since I was one of the craziest music lovers, yes, everyone was tired after the long sessions, we need them to be shorter during Sapporo time. When I flew back to Zagreb after the last day, I slept all day, thankgoodness I was able to catch my flight out! Wooohoo. Yeup, we all need sleep so we don't get grouchy!
There was one advantage though, well some people did take a dip every now and then to bug away the sleep in the nearby beach but there were some of us who always forgot our bathing kits, guess who? However, here are a few points to ponder from the Dubrovnik experience but before that, yes, Dubrovnik rocked and I am sure Sapporo will too!
1) The Concerts: This venue looks prettttttttyeeeee big, what if this time we had a music Fiesta! A dinner complemented by music or how about lunch and music together in sort of a village type gathering? Ok that was a longshot, how about having music as part of a regular session since the bus timings for pick ups were fixed. Lets give everyone the nights to wander the wilderness and lets give the artists a chance to rock in a full gathering? Hey look, I was there to complement all of the performers, lets give a chance to everyone for joining in the fun.
2) Sapporo Open Air Concert: I vote outdoors too, it was really sweaty in there, not because we don't sweat outside, of course we do, but still you know an Open Air Concert really gets things rocking, btw, if anyone does get bored, me and Kiruba are going to offer BHANGRA NIGHT and dances from South Asia! Yes, we will of course play copyrighted plus self-produced
BHANGRA rythems but we are going to teach all the participants how to dance.
Umm, I actually taught a couple of participants to do that one night, I could've slipped from the cliff and fallen 60 feet down into the water, maaan! By the way, for those who don't know about Bhangra, its a folk dance from the Punjab regions of South Asia in which you have to raise your arms at shoulder level and point your index fingers upwards and jump up and down, its more fun then how bad that sounds, you'll all love it! BHANGRA is played inline with the latest electro, trance, hip hop music you can find so don't miss it!
3) Venue and Transportation: How about if the possibility would be there to have most of this in a self-created village around where all the venue and hotels are, I know I may be talking out of my mind but if I can explain it right, give everyone the opportunity to be closer to the venue and let them go back and forth in a giffy or jiffy, whatever that quicky is!
4) Early to concerts and early to bed, makes us happy happy participants! Yeah thats a cool idea and also, can we have Open Cultural Tents this time, countries and regions that want to open up their culture, music and creative offerings can have tents so instead of everyone running off here and there, they will have a great place to go to, I propose the iSummit Cultural Village! I wonder if ya all got what that meant, otherwise just ping me!
CHEERS TO the iCOMMONS iSUMMIT Team in SAPPORO!

Also love the idea of a 'cultural village' - lets see if anyone else wants to do that :)

Btw, BHANGRA night requires that Heather would be less busy as she usually is because Heather works too HARD! I am gonna make sure next year that I can drag you away from all that tough work and help you relax with BHANGRA! Don't worry, there will be many volunteers, I hope ;o)
Cheers and keep smilin!
