Thoughts on Buma/Stemra creative commons Pilot: Non-commercial use.
Consider this: Most of the exposure for "self published" art comes via non-profit outlets. I reckon very much more than most people that license their works with a creative commons licenses, be it an artist with a collection society or an artist not with one. Choose to use a non-commercial creative commons license because they want these spaces/forms of media to use this content without having to pay for use. .
Without a non-commercial use that resembles a creative commons non-commercial use, the user of the license and also the artist might be confused.
The way forward for the pilot might be to create a new license that integrates with what a commercial use is under the definition of a commercial use for a collection society. Artists would click on a button when creating a license to let the users of the license know that they are a member of a collection society or not.
Thoughts on Buma/Stemra: As the Buma/Stemra board is run by artist and publishers members that collect the most, the board might be working against their own "short term" interests to change what a commercial use is. Why ? This might slightly decrease revenues for published artists and increase exposure for "self publishing" artists.
If Buma/Stemra had a one member one vote system the system would work better for small publishers and less known artists in Holland. Under such a system adapting the non-commercial use for a creative commons license, would be a natural progression.
