The free culture movement, and the commons current within it, are eminently practical, concerned with increasing the freedom of culture in a multiplicity of locales, each requiring appropriate location specific responses.
There are however certain core ideas which give coherence to the free culture movement generally and the commons. These ideas are receiving most recognition at the level of political science and economics. There are however deeper philosophical dimensions of these ideas. This node is a place where attention can be paid to those dimensions.
Some of these dimensions are receiving attention at the iSummit 07:
What do we mean by free culture? Is it just a reaction against copyright, or a broader positive movement for the arts? Should we take our inspiration from the free software, and if not what philosophical and tactical differences should we account for?

We have some exciting new upgrades to icommons.org to report! The latest updates to the site include:
- The ability to upload vertical pictures along with horizontal pictures to the site. We've also set the minimum picture size from 600 to 420 pixels, and you can upload both jpgs and pngs.
