Encourage artists to license their works to allow commercial use of content
Right now company's around the world are not as profitable as they could be as they having to pay fees for the use of intellectual property. "Self published" artists are not able to get a foot in the door for their art as the publishing system promotes the re-use of popular art. As copyright extends, the system has become locked up with works owned by publishers. New technologies make it easier for most of the world to publish, yet getting attention for art through the regular publishing system is hard work. This work often means that the artist ends up being a business person, rather than an artist. Many talented artists change paths as a result, some even stop creating as its so difficult for their art to get exposure. A lot of artists would be happy to know that their art is being used (attribution would be an unexpected bonus in many instances)
Recently I created a myspace to let musical artists know about creative commons and problems that relate to the collection society in Australia APRA. A venue in Brisbane got in touch with me through the space and as a result had a meeting with venues in their region. Venues in Australia are worried that APRA may put up its prices up for use of content and that this in turn could put them out of business. Anti smoking laws have just been introduced, also people are staying at home with myspace, rather than going out to see a live band or DJ at a club. Clubs are really struggling in many parts of the world.
The result of this meeting was that the venues thought to create a company. The company would collect works they could use in their clubs and encourage artists to license works they could use in these clubs. These licenses would be Attribution; Attribution-NoDerivatives; and Attribution-ShareAlike (information Jessica Coates)
Thoughts:
* An old fashioned duke box attributes the artist when their material is being played.
* Could a cafe (maybe even a supermarket) not have a list on their table/service counter of the days musical works.
* A play list could be downloaded and "wifi radio" could be in a space.
* Night clubs are able to use content provided they attribute the artist for their works. (these lists could be published on a central site)
* This attribution on a community level would mean that artists near these clubs could do shows.
* If CD quality files were available on the net, then cd shops could print up cd's plus artwork. If the artist made them available, to use this way. Good distribution.
* If photo's were on cafe walls, the cafe could print and sell them.
* This attribution would mean that artist art was being distributed into peoples homes.
* Business might be encouraged to donate to the artists when they use these materials (create tax incentive for this kind of donation, is this possible ?)
* Create a website where artists can have high quality files uploaded that can be used. Make cc materials the best quality on the net.
* The content could be sold with a product. Example. You buy a MP3 player, its loaded with materials in the style you choose. You buy a car, the stereo is loaded with music of your choice or style. You buy a DVD player it comes loaded with free films. Rather than watching a blank screen as the network can't afford content, they play free content after midnight.
The plan
ecologically.
* Get business's around the world interested in this node.
* Work out what type of materials these business want.
* Link up with organizations/company's already doing this.
* Form a company to collect and distribute these works.
* Create incentives for artists to contribute to the commercial use catalog.
* Advertise and market the attribution catalog to business and public.
Possible Outcomes
* Business's save money and promote artists that may possibly not get attention due to the commercial nature of business and art.
* Commercial publishes might be more concerned about their catalog content, more competitive market.
* Better ecology for distribution of ART.
* Attribution through commercial use becomes a form of currency.
* Artists get a fast evaluation of what use their style of material has in the market place.
* Artists may get work through their contributions (live shows, exhibition, tour). Like programers through the open source movement do.
