Wikimedia Licensing Policy Change – A Study
WIPO has published a new paper, Wikimedia Licensing Policy Change – A Conundrum, which anlayzes various legal issues arising from the recent switch by Wikimedia from the GNU* Free Documentation License (GFDL) to the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License (Share-Alike). The paper’s author is Herkko Hietanen, who conducts research at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, Communications Futures Program at MIT and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard. The paper looks at problems relating to 1) the existence of multiple national versions of CC licenses and 2) the fact that additional parties such as FSF and MMC might now introduction additional terms that could further affect interoperability.
