Global calls for information

Several new calls have been announced seeking input from the public.

Government data: The Open Knowledge Foundation and Access Info are currently seeking information on open government data initiatives around the world.  The open call – including citizen-driven initiatives, official government polices and projects, mash up competitions, data sources and innovative reuses of open government data - has been posted at http://opengovernmentdata.org/form.

Open Educational Resources: Creative Commons latest project, the Open Database of Educational Projects and Organizations (or ODEPO), needs your help!  In 2008, CC conducted a survey of educational projects online in a report entitled “What Status for Open? An Examination of the Licensing Policies of Open Educational Organizations and Projects” (pdf). Currently, ODEPO includes 1147 sites affiliated with various organizations. CC hopes to expand the database to help researchers, advocates, and learners find educational projects, analyze trends in online education, and become more effective advocates for open education. To help: Browse ODEPO and follow the instructions.  There is also an Open Tasks tracker where you can find lists of pages that need more data.

Open bibliographic data:  The Open Knowledge Foundation has started a working group on open bibliographic data to strengthen the network of individuals, projects and institutions with an interest in this area.  In the first instance this group will aim to:

  1. Act as a central point of reference and support for people interested in open bibliographic data
  2. Identify relevant projects and practices. Promote best practices as well as legal and technical standards for making data open (such as the Open Knowledge Definition).
  3. Act as a hub for the development and maintenance of low cost, community driven projects related to open bibliographic data.

To join, add yourself to the open-bibliography mailing list. OKF has also started a bibliographic data group on CKAN, our open source registry of open data.

Open Access:  India’s National Agricultural Research System (NARS) launched a survey on attitudes toward Open Acess.  See http://survey.oksociety.in/index.php?sid=85161&lang=en.
